John Eerkes-Medrano, award-winning editor and member of PEAVI, spoke about editing trade books and the editor’s relationship with the publisher. He also gave tips for those who would like to edit trade books.

Our guest speaker was Dorothy Field, a Victoria-based poet and author of Paper and Threshold: The Paradox of Spiritual Connection in Asian Cultures (bronze medal winner of the 2008 Independent Publisher Book Awards, Legacy Press http://www.legacy-press.com). Dorothy spoke about papermaking and her new book of poems, Wearing My People Like a Shawl (Sono Nis Press). She also spoke about what a privilege it is to be edited by a good editor. Dorothy Field studied design at the University of California at Berkeley, specializing in textiles, and her work on Asian papermaking in Japan, Korea and Nepal is recognized internationally.

Jillian Ridington and Robin Ridington discussed the means and processes involved in creating final works in a variety of media. They will present examples of source materials and how they were used in a final document, evaluate hardware and software that can be used, and discuss the problems and challenges encountered with translating source material to various media.

How do you edit poetry? Not the same way you edit prose! Bob Amussen, one of the founding members of PEAVI, and Jane Munro (whose fourth collection of poetry, Point No Point, was published by McClelland & Stewart in 2006) joined us for a discussion of strategies and guidelines for editing poetry.

PEAVI members and their guests are invited to attend our annual Summer Social at Abkhazi Garden at 1964 Fairfield Road in Victoria. A hidden gem in Fairfield, Abkhazi Garden is located on the north side of the street, just east of Foul Bay Road. Parking is limited on Fairfield Road, but there is some parking on Shotbolt Road (opposite the garden) and Foul Bay Road (just west of the garden). Please do not park on the south side of Fairfield Road. Carpool, walk, or cycle if possible. See you there.

Editor, journalist, and author Ross Crockford joined us at this PEAVI meeting. Crockford is former editor of Monday Magazine, an award-winning freelance writer, a one-time journalist for the Prague Post, a long-time Intrepid Theatre board member, and the author of the bestselling guidebook Victoria: The Unknown City. He also teaches a course called “Polishing the Diamond: Writing Spectacular Non-Fiction” at the Victoria School of Writing.

PEAVI member Fran Aitkens discussed editing numbers, tables, and graphs. As a complement to our workshop on plain language editing, Fran provided some guidelines for helping numerical data to speak plainly.
Fran has worked as a freelance editor of scientific and technical material since 1990. Her clients have included Smithsonian Institution Press, McGraw-Hill, UBC Press, several medical journals, and many federal and provincial scientific ministries. In 1998, Fran passed the board examination and was certified as an editor in the life sciences (ELS).
