Many documents that editors work on have one basic goal: to deliver information to the reader. But all too often, that information gets buried by weak organization, wordiness, abstract language, jargon, poor page design and other barriers to readability.
In this one-day introduction to plain language, you will learn how to remove those barriers and build a document that says what it means.

Christine Ewart, editorial supervisor with Hansard Services, will provide a glimpse into the world of editing BC's official report of legislative debates. In addition to reviewing Hansard's production process and the employment opportunities it affords, Christine will touch on Hansard's success in combining formal classroom training with mentoring to prepare new editors to handle the unique aspects of Hansard work.

Curtis Strong, a registered practitioner of Jin Shin Do acupressure, taught us a simple acupressure sequence to relieve neck and shoulder tension, a common complaint of the harried, desk-bound editor. He invited our curiosity and participation in this self-care session.

Guest Speaker Jay Ruzesky was born in Edmonton, Alberta and now lives in Victoria. He is on the editorial board of The Malahat Review and is co-founder of Outlaw Editions. He has taught at the University of Victoria and, since 1990, at Malaspina University College in Duncan, BC. His titles include Am I Glad to See You, Painting the Yellow House Blue and several chapbooks. Jay has been featured in the anthologies Breathing Fire: Canada's New Poets (Harbour), In the Clear (Thistledown) and Meltwater (Banff Centre) and in magazines such as Saturday Night, Prism International, Poetry Canada Review and Event.

Ron Rothnie is the author of The ABCs of English Grammar: A Twenty-First Century Handbook. His presentation to PEAVI will cover the basics of grammar, how it is (or isn't) taught to modern day students, and the social implications of low literacy rates in our society. PEAVI members toured the GVPL Central Library with librarian guide Ursula Benoit. Ursula gave an overview of the Technological Tools and Resources, the Catalogue Improvements, General References, and answered questions about the library. The GVPL Website says "The Central Library is the main resource centre for the Library system and has many specialized collections and services, as well as an excellent general collection."

PEAVI Members and guests enjoyed a tour of Abkhazi Gardens (a wonderful hidden treasure in Fairfield) and enjoyed some finger food with other PEAVI members and their guests at PEAVI's end-of-year social. The weather was great and the garden tour fantastic!
